Mixed Team Challenge Award
Ducky ( Don ) Wight was a local Wellington athlete who exemplified the spirit of individual effort. Combined with his abilities to work with teams, he had a way of encouraging others to achieve their personal goals through his leadership and by example. Most of all he wanted to make sure there was always an element of fun in the effort.
‘Ducky’, in his youth, was an excellent hockey player, and as he grew up in his hometown he frequently expressed the desire to return something to his community. He did this through coaching and managing minor hockey teams, serving as Councilor for the village of Wellington, and joining as a Charter member of the Wellington Rotary Club where he was very active in virtually all of the projects the fledgling club tackled.
As a local businessman Ducky could always be counted on to support local events. As the Marathon came to Prince Edward County, Ducky threw his support behind it and, in doing so, discovered a new interest in running. As a large man he inspired more people than he realized with his unexpected, new found, dedication to running.
With Ducky’s unfortunate passing it is fitting to recognize his dedication to team sports and running by naming the Mixed Team Challenge in his memory.
